Muddy River

Coffee brown muddy river
dark grey skies
out from under blanket shiver
off yellow sunrise.
What’s this new day holdin?
Hope, it’s a surprise.
Wipe the rest out of my eyes.

Old Nissan pickup
covered up in frost.
Chariot of good luck.
Two die down the highway tossed.
The preacher isn’t gamblin.
The hobo isn’t lost.
No, the truth is boss.

Laughter in the back room.
Guitars falling from tune.
I’ll buy the next round
full moon.
Taking them old songs
and making them new.
Some nights dreams of light
come shinin through.
