Everything Must Go

I’d been looking for the right words
to say what’s on my mind.
I’d been looking everywhere
for quite a long time
when i saw a little sign
hanging in a window.
That little sign said everything.
Everything must go.

Funny, that’s what I was thinking
walking down the road.
Thinking about the hard times,
the darker days I’ve known.
Thinking about my younger days.
My, how they have grown!
I think I hear the river sing.
Everything must go.

The lantern in the window.
The ships that pace the shore.
The whiskey in the winter.
The way we were before.
Pointing to the great sky, saying
“We will one day know.”
Now I’m pointing to this little sign.
Everything must go.
