Motorcade

left my eye on the motorcade
turned the corner rolled away
i was older, the children played
follow the leader.
Headlines many stories tall
told of the naked emperor’s fall
i watched a lady obeying the law
feed the meter.

the line between my mind
and what i find
is a wire stretched taut
and i’m high above the crowd
and i’m not

the sun was dancing in the sky
and throwing shade on the roadside
and all the vacations were flying by
and i wondered to myself
is there rain on a sunny day
i don’t mean some place far away
but now here in the words I say
and nowhere else.

she told the truth, she didn’t stay
i was older the children played
i watched as the meter maid
wrote out a ticket.
i guess the lady didn’t feed enough
in the end she needed more dough
where do you go when the going gets tough
do you get to pick it?
